Gustav Mahler - The Resurrection

On Wednesday, April 19, St James Cathedral Artist-in-Residence David Briggs will perform his organ transcription of Mahler's  monumental Resurrection Symphony. Featuring the eminent St James Cathedral choir along with outstanding Toronto-based soloists Julia Morson (soprano) and Christina Stelmacovich (mezzo-soprano), this uniquely thrilling performance has moved audiences the world over with its transcendent beauty and grandeur.  

David Briggs is an internationally renowned organist. With an extensive repertoire spanning five centuries, he is known across the globe for his brilliant organ transcriptions of symphonic music by composers such as Mahler, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Elgar, Bruckner, Ravel, and Bach. David also frequently performs improvisations to silent films such as Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre-Dame, Metropolis, as well as a variety of Charlie Chaplin films. 

The Canadian soprano, Julia Morson, (pictured bottom left) has been praised for her versatility of sound and style working in all genres of music from opera, oratorio, and early music to theatre, new music and jazz. She enjoys the collaborative nature of music and spends much of her time working on projects that bring together artists from a variety of musical and cultural genres.

Christina Stelmacovich (pictured bottom right) is highly regarded for the richness of her voice, expressiveness of style and wonderful interpretive singing in oratorio, opera and art song. A winner and finalist of several international vocal competitions including the Concours Musical de Montréal, the CBC/Radio-Canada National Competition for Young Performers as well as the International Brahms Competition held in Pörtschach, Austria where she was described as “an elegant and noble singer whose beautiful voice and attention to diction captivated the listener”.
